How to be Awesome at the Gym…without pissing anyone off.

Posted: November 24, 2010 in Uncategorized

Gym Etiquette will gain you respect and keep you focused for a better workout.

Wipe it down

Wipe down your equipment after you use it… no one wants to sit in your pool of sweat! Bring a towel, bro.

Don’t be that guy with the phone.

Leave your cell in the car… unless you want everyone to know that you call your girlfriend “Snuggles”.

Don’t be a machine hog.

It’s kind of like merging: If everyone did it right, traffic would probably be non-existent. Be aware of those around you and make sure they haven’t been waiting for more than 25 minutes. Everyone in the gym, yourself included, should offer to switch it up between reps— that way everyone’s time is saved.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself

Snuggles might tell you she loves your stench (she’s being nice), but the guys gulping down air on the treadmill definitely don’t.

Return your weights.

I know you’re all jacked because you’re taking GlycoCarn or training for a show…but that 60 year old grandpa keepin’ it real: he definitely can’t lift those dumbbells. Don’t make him have to ask for assistance; return your weights when you’re done.

Don’t hurt yourself showing off.

Is it really worth injuring yourself just to impress the gym goers? Trust me, the people who matter aren’t there. Like judges. Or Snuggles.

Be Focused.

Those girls you’re trying to subtlety check out in the mirror know what you’re doing, and they probably don’t like it, even if you’re jacked. Focus on your weights to prevent injury.

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I think EVERY gym should hand this out with the membership materials as well as post it all over the gym. You would think that most of this is common sense, but not so much!

  2. Tom says:

Aahahahahaha this is Hilarious and so true!! People so All of these things at my gym and gotta admit, THEY ANNOY ME

    • tommyalston says:

Seriously, the gym is a wonderful tool and safe-house for most of us to get away and get our work out on. Preserve it, keep it nice, this way…you’ll wanna come back next time!!

  3. karen says:

this group of muscle heads totally do that every time i try to go to the weight side of the gym.. it kind of makes me avoid doing weights all together. HEY GUYS LISTEN TO TOMMY I THINK HE FINALLY GETS IT

  4. Jeff says:

Guilty as Charged: Can’t help it girls, sorry. Maybe i’ll try to be a little more discrete about it but as a single Alfa Male I can’t help but be scoping out

  5. Christana says:

I’m passing this on to my boyfriend, he’s always leaving the gym equipment sweaty and I usually go after him! Gross!

  6. Scott says:

Dude, I love this. Guys totally leave all their manners at home and it’s so annoying!

  7. Mason says:

It’s hard not to check out girls at the gym. How are you guys discreet?

    • tommyalston says:

Honestly Mason, girls will be noticing YOU when you implement the guide to not piss anyone off. The truth is, no matter how jacked you are, girls don’t wanna date someone makes them feel uncomfortable. Let them notice you being polite–and offer to help if it looks like a girl is struggling with weights (actually, your efforts in helping anyone will pay off, what goes around comes around bro). Trust me, your manners will show you off. And if a girl is so pretty you just can’t help yourself, you said it yourself, just be discreet: glance at her while wiping your face off with a towel, etc… there are ways to look at someone without them knowing. Good luck.

  8. Jason says:

Tommy, have you ever considered owning a gym?

  9. Mindy says:

Thanks for putting this out there Tommy. Honestly, sometimes I hate going to gym because I end up leaving feeling like an object. And I’m in sweatpants and a tank top! Girls deserve to be able to work out without being gawked at. It’s enough to just get my butt there with all of my self-consciousness and then to feel like I’m on display, it’s horrible!!!

    • tommyalston says:

I hear where your coming from Mindy. Nobody likes to feel uncomfortable, especially at the gym. Some guys just don’t about the guidelines, or how to treat ladies like human beings. My advice is to just ignore them, and if it gets really bad, talk to the manager of the gym. You can even ask them to make sure your complaint is anonymous so the guy doesn’t know you were the one who made the complaint. And no matter what, don’t give up on your fitness goals because of someone else! This is your body, your life, you get to be in charge!

  10. Mikey says:

This one time I went to the gym and left my weights, didn’t return them to shelf. This jacked guy came over to me with a little old lady and said “Do you think my grandma could actually lift that?” To be honest, she looked like she was in training for a show, but I got the point! It was embarrassing and I thought that guy was gonna take me outside.

  11. Coryn says:

    haha this is FANTASTIC!..
